Turn off street lights overnight

Turn off street lighting overnight.

When and where lighting is deemed necessary, use efficient LED bulbs and keep the intensity to the minimum.

This measure has already been adopted in other parts of the UK and abroad.

Why the contribution is important

Excessive street lighting is a waste of money and is detrimental to the environment. In much of the region there are few people outside at night and little road traffic.

Turning off the lights overnight would reduce power consumption with consequent cost savings while reducing the region's "carbon footprint" and improving the quality of the natural environment by reducing light pollution with benefits for health and wildlife.

It could be incorporated into a "dark skies" initiative to help people understand and appreciate the natural world and to attract visitors to the area.

A study reported in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health in 2015 "found little evidence of harmful effects of switch off, part-night lighting, dimming, or changes to white light/LEDs on road collisions or crime in England and Wales." http://jech.bmj.com/content/early/2015/07/08/jech-2015-206012
